It’s an old tune, says Awang Tengah
KUCHING: The opposition claiming credit for the repeal of the ISA does not come as a surprise to Second Minister of Planning and Resource Management Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan.
Speaking to reporters after attending a rehearsal for the coming Head of State birthday celebration at Padang Merdeka yesterday, Awang Tengah said it had become the norm for the opposition to claim credit for any laudable move made by the government.
“I am pretty sure the rakyat know how it works (with the opposition) pretty well. But the fact is that talk on the ISA abolition has been on the table since Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s time as Prime Minister,” he said.
He said he believed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who announced the abolishment of the ISA last Thursday, was committed in his action.
On another matter, Awang Tengah commented that Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s recent call for discipline among BN component party members was right on target as discipline was vital for the coalition to continue to move forward.
Taib made the call at the state-level Malaysia Day celebration last Friday.
“We need discipline among party members. It is a fundamental attitude in terms of governance and planning, which will surely become an important trait to a developed state,” he had said.
