Ashri gets first national call-up
Dream comes true for young Crocs midfielderKUCHING: State footballer Ashri Chuchu got a dream call up to don the national colour and could feature in Malaysia’s match against Syria in the race for Olympic qualification.
Ashri will straight join the national team’s training camp which begins today to prepare for the match against Syria on March 14.
Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) president Datu Sudarsono Osman said Ashri’s call-up was a great honour to Sarawak football.
“We are very happy to receive a letter from the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) asking to release Ashri for training with the national squad.
“Ashri is a good role model for our younger players. I believe more players will follow the footsteps of Ashri to represent the national team in the near future.
“FAS hope Ashri could strengthen the national team in international competitions,” said Sudarsono who added that the young player from Luagan village of Sundar in Lawas have shown great commitment and confidence to help Sarawak earn promotion to the Super League this season.
“We are confident that the call up would enhance the quality of Ashri’s game from time to time as he mature to become a professional footballer,” Sudarsono said.
Head coach Robert Alberts was also pleased with the selection of Ashri whom he regarded as a ‘jewel’ that will shine in the national football arena.
Alberts believes Ashri would be able to prove his prowess in helping the national team getting good results in international matches.
“I believe that Ashri will continue to enhance his performance with the national squad,” said Alberts of Ashri who just celebrated his 21st birthday on Feb 27.
Meanwhile, Ashri promised to give his full commitment in the training sessions in order to be listed in the final squad of 18 players to fly to Jordan.
“I was very excited to receive the news of the call up. I will strive to find a place in the national squad and make Sarawak proud,” he said.
It was a double joy for Sarawak football as Nur Azira Mohd Nor, 22, also earned a call up to attend centralise training with the Malaysian women football squad.
