Passengers: Why are the emergency doors not opened?
KUCHING: A fault that occurred on Air Asia plane from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching during landing caused panic among the passengers inside when the plane skidded and overshot the runaway around 10.15pm yesterday.
The plane was supposed to take off from Kuala Lumpur at 7.30pm but was delayed until 8.30pm.
According to one of the passengers, the pilot had announced to the passengers that Kuching was drizzling but upon their apporach, it was a heavy downpour. The plane had a hard landing, went off from the runaway and skid through the muddy field beyond the runaway.
Passengers inside panicked and according to 44-year-old Chan who was inside the plane with her son and her son’s girlfriend, once the plane landed everything was in confusion.
The stewardess even asked them to stay put at their seat but according to Chan, the emergency exit door should be opened as soon as the plane stopped.
Chan revealed that there was a slight delay in the emergency doors opening. Smoke was seen coming out from the engine compartment and every passenger hurried to the exit door. Reaching outside, all the passengers had to go through the muddy field and walked to the fire station before they were transported by the airport bus to the terminal.
Chan, together with the majority of the passengers, were unhappy with the service provided because after the incident, the passengers were actually on their own.
One of the passengers, Balai Ringin state assemblyman, Snowdan Lawan and his wife, said that once the plane landed, the stewardess actually asked them to remain seated when at that moment smoke was seen emitting from the engine.
The emergency doors should be the first to be opened, according to Snowdan and the other passengers.
Another passenger, Wong, aged 23-year-old, gave the distress call to his mom at 10.15pm, crying that the plane had an emergency landing.
The family member dashed from Batu Kawah to the airport. Wong was sobbing throughout the whole scenario as it was a real dreadful experience for him.
