PDK Lawas to offer training
LAWAS: People with disabilities and special needs (OKUs) would soon have access to proper training and rehabilitation facilities with the formation of PDK Lawas.
Its patron Datuk Dayang Morliah Awang Daud said the centre could be fully operational by early next year.
“We would recruit trained and efficient teachers to help those registered with the centre,” she said after chairing a meeting for the establishment of PDK Lawas on Tuesday.
Its first chairman is Mohd Supaih Hamdan, with Syarulizan Madian as deputy chairman, Adeng @ Idris Edrus (secretary), Aminah Ali (assistant secretary) and Penghulu Hassan Pilus (treasurer) as office bearers.
The committee members are Temenggong Paris Kaya, Pemanca Tan Hua H’ng, penghulu Reduan Tahir, penghulu Tiga Buyun, Liaw Chai, Puan Kong, Josephine Datuk Henry Sum, Dollah Suhaili and Hajah Suboh.
Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan and Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong are its advisors.
Morliah, who has been in the forefront of getting OKUs to be assisted, explained that those registered with the centre would be able to undergo community-based rehabilitation programmes under the supervision of the State Welfare Department.
She said she was delighted with the formation of PDK Lawas as previously OKUs came under the care of the Semai Bakti programme — through Perkim Lawas.
“They (OKUs) have the right to various forms of assistance and education,” said Morliah, who is also Perkim Lawas chairperson.
The meeting was attended by Welfare Department director Noriah Ahmad, state assistant director for OKU Development Department Mordiah Sulaiman, Divisional Welfare Department assistant director Aziah Saruji and local community leaders.
