Taib: Islam and unity go hand in hand

LAWAS: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud says the people ought to understand that Islam is very significant in the unity agenda in accordance with its role as the bringer of peace to the world.

“The main requirement for success and progress is strong unity among the people irrespective of the colour of their skin, race, ethnicity or country,” Taib said at the presentation of prizes to winners of the state-level Quran recital contest here on Thursday.His text of speech was read by Second Minister of Planning and Resource Management Datuk Amar Haji Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

“The unity agenda is a priority not only practised by Muslims but also other religions and races in this country,” he said.

The Chief Minister also called for the learning of the Quran to be strengthened further not only in the reading aspect, but most importantly, in the understanding of the messages and practise the teaching.

He also urged mosque and surau management committees to work closely together with the relevant agencies to further improve Quran classes in their respective neighbourhoods.“This is in keeping with the Prophet’s advice to Muslims to always read the Quran.” Changes in technology and human prog re s s , the Chi e f Minister added, gave little choices to Muslims but to get ready successions of younger Muslims in facing not just the changes the world brings but the duty to uphold Islam.

“This borderless world of electronic commerce, digital and information technology, cyber crime, race science, economic power and many other challenges can only be faced successfully by generations of people who are ready mentally, physically and spiritually,” he added.

Touching on the theme of this year’s Quran recital competition ‘1Malaysia 1Ummah’, the Chief Minister said 1Malaysia was a continuation of the previous leadership’s aspiration to bring Malaysia into a developed nation, as in the 1Malaysia.

“The ‘1Malaysia 1Ummah’ concept asks every Malaysian to help each other regardless of their culture, ethnicity and customs.

“Every citizen must live as one big family without feeling being marginalised or ignored in the march toward a developed and high-income Malaysia,” he added.

President of Islamic Council, Datu Haji Putit Matzen representing Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs) Datuk Haji Daud Abdul Rahman, also spoke at the function.Daud is also Chairman of the Standing Committee of Muslim festivals of Sarawak.

More than 5,000 people attended the function held at Dataran Amphitheatre next to Hotel Seri Malaysia here.

Twelve Qaris and 12 Qariahs from Kuching, Samarahan, Miri, Sri Aman, Bintulu, Betong, Limbang, Sibu and Mukah Divisions, took part in the competition.

The Head of State Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad Salahuddin and Toh Puan Datuk Pat inggi Hajah Norkiah also attended the prize presentation ceremony.
