Quran recital competition gives exposure to Muslims

THANK YOU: Awang Tengah (centre) presenting a souvenir to former state Imam, Ustaz Nahrawi Abdul Rahman who is also chairman of the panel of judges while Putit looks on.

LAWAS: The record crowd at the state-level Quran recital competition here is a positive development with its high standard providing exposure to the Muslim community.

Second Minister of Planning and Resource Management Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said this at an appreciation lunch for judges of the state-level Quran Recital Competition held here from May 9-12.

“People from almost every village turned up every night including those in Ulu Merapok, bordering Sabah,” he said.

He said such religious function had traditionally drawn big crowds, including Forum Perdana which attracted a crowd of 20,000 at the old football field, which is being replaced by the Lawas Town Square as the venue for the competition’s finals.

A total of 24 Qari and Qariah are competing to represent the state at the national level competition which will be held in Kuching this year.

Also present at the function were Tengah’s wife, Datuk Dayang Morliah Datuk Awang Daud; Brunei consul-general to Sarawak, Kamsani Noordin; Datuk Putit Matzen, chairman of Sarawak Islamic Council and others.
