Citra Alti are kings of Lawas
LAWAS: Two teams from Citra Alti monopolised the boat race at Lawas River yesterday, dashing the ambitions of favourites Putera Sungai Lawas.
Citra Alti 1 emerged champions while the Citra Alti 2 team finished second.A team owned by Dato Henry Sum, Tabuan, ended up in third place.
The strength and endurance of the two teams from Citra Alti thwarted the ambitions of Putera Sungai Lawasa who were champions in 2008.
Punang Gemilang, who had bought new boats, were definitely downcast after failing to stop Citra Alti.
This year’s event saw an increase in the number of teams taking part, from 44 to 61, making it a grander affair yesterday.
To put the icing on the cake, Sarawak Second Mi n i s t e r for Planning and Resources Management Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan also announced that the Lawas Festival had been included as one of the events in the calendar of the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism and Heritage.
About 70,000 people thronged the sites at several districts in Lawas, including the ones at Taman Awam Lawas and Tebingan Lawas to watch the Sejiwa Senada event and the boat races.
Awang Tengah, in congratulating the winners, said he hoped the competitors had made new friends and forged lasting friendships during the races.
