Kemalangan di Jalan Merapok

Bandar Seri Begawan - Three Bruneian women were killed in a head-on collision with an oil tanker at the 16 km section of Jalan Merapok, Lawas early Sunday afternoon, while the other two passengers in the Land Rover 4x4 they were travelling in, sustained injuries.

The Borneo Post reported that Lawas OCPD, DSP Anthony Abell confirmed the accident involving the five Bruneians, while the lorry tanker driver surrendered to Lawas Police.

Malaysian news reports identified the deceased as Grace Tan, Fang Qiu Xiang and Jacqueline Wong.

The Brunei Times yesterday contacted the Lawas District Hospital to find out whether the two injured victims were still being treated there, and whether the bodies of the three deceased had been brought back to Brunei.

The 28-year-old Medical Officer in-charge at the Lawas District hospital, who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed that three Bruneian females did not survive the car crash, and were brought to the hospital's mortuary where "external examinations" were undertaken by staff at the hospital.

"The Lawas police were also there to take photographs. Family members of the three deceased arrived from Brunei and Limbang, and requested that their bodies be brought back to Brunei," he said.

He added, "All three of the deceased were brought back to Brunei about 10 in the evening yesterday."

Meanwhile, the Medical Officer in-charge of the two injured victims said they were brought to the hospital's emergency department, by the Malaysian police, at different times in the afternoon.

"One Bruneian was brought in to the emergency department first around 2.30 in the afternoon," he explained.

At approximately 2.50pm, the Medical Officer said the second patient, who bears a Malaysian identity card and a Brunei passport, arrived at the emergency department.

However, the Medical Officer explained after they were stabilised, he immediately contacted the Miri hospital in Sarawak, as well as the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (Ripas) hospital to refer the patients there.

"Both hospitals agreed to accept the patients. I spoke to the emergency department's specialist at Ripas, and he agreed for the Bruneian patient to be transferred there," he said.

He said he then asked both patients whether it would be alright to send the Bruneian to Ripas, and the other to the Miri hospital, and they both agreed.

At approximately six in the evening, he said an ambulance from the Lawas District hospital took both patients to the Kuala Lurah border.

"However, my staff told me that the other patient (bearing a Bruneian passport and Malaysian IC) also wanted to be admitted to Ripas. It is unknown why she chose to go to Ripas. So I called the Miri hospital to tell them the referral had been cancelled," he said.

When contacted, the Ministry of Health declined to comment.

According to See Hua Daily, it said that one of the injured victims told their journalists that all five of them were on their way to Sipitang, Sabah for a tour. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
