Vital to get message across - Awang Tengah

The state Information Ministry will soon revamp all programmes under its various agencies with the aim of chanelling the government’s plans and policies more effectively to the people now that the state election is near.

Second Minister of Planning and Resource Management Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan told the media this when breaking the fast with staff of RTM Kuching and the Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture and Arts here on Tuesday.

He explained that the state (information) ministry headed by Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Haji Satem would integrate and work closely with all other agencies concerned with regards to their programmes and activities in order to plug the communication gap.

Tengah went on to explain that radio and television were still the most efficient media to convey the government’s plans and policies to the people wherever they were, except the deep interior, unlike other medium such as newspapers which were only accessible to the urban and semi-urban areas.

“This is where RTM will come in. It will continue working to improve the quality of transmission including areas in the interior,” he said.

On another issue, Tengah said that he would look into the Sebuyau persistant water woes and the short age and low water pressure faced by the people in Serian District.

“The problem in Serian is basically insufficient water supply to meet demand brought about by the growing population. At one stage, the government had to deploy mobile (water treatment) plants to meet the shortfall.

“The government has already made plans to construct or expand the water treatement plants as well as laying additional pipelines to solve the water supply problems.

“The extension (plan) of the Serian treatment plant is already underway and work will start soon,” he said.

Assistant Minister of Public Utilities Dr Stephen Rundi who was also present at the function meanwhile said the state BN was all geared up for the state election which would probably be held next year. He said the land issue harped upon by the opposition would not dent the BN’s chances of securing a big win.

On the flood in Sibu, he said that no one from the DAP was around, not even Wong Ho Leng, to check on the situation on the ground. “Where was he when the people needed him most?” Dr Rundi was referring to the Sibu MP who had been criticising the state government for its inability to solve the perennial flood woes.

Also present at the break-offast were Assistant Minister of Communi cat ion Datuk Le e Khim Shin, Assistant Ministr of Environment Datuk Peter Nansian, Assistant Minister of Public Utilities Slyvester Entrie, Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Larry Sng Wei Shien, Asajaya assemblyman Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and RTM Sarawak director Abdul Jalani Mahmud.
