Lawas players need help
LAWAS: Several young players who had played in the Sukma for Sarawak displayed their talent during the open badminton tournament organised by the Lawas Malay Badminton Association here over the weekend.
The two-day tournament at the Lawas Mega Sport badminton hall, which started on Saturday, attracted 11 teams, including those from Sipitang, Sindumin and Labuan in Sabah.
The local challenge came from teams from Limbang and Lawas.
Lawas District Officer, Haji Mohd Supaih Haji Hamdan, who officiated at the opening ceremony, called on more youth to take up badminton.
“Playing and competing in badminton can help people keep fit and this will help them give more at their work places.
“Healthy people can work harder and contribute to the progress of the country,” said Mohd Supaih.
He also hoped that players from Sabah who competed in the event would extend help and tips to local players so that they can improve their game.
“The young players in this northern corridor of Sarawak need all the help in terms of coaching and training.
We welcome any assistance from coaches and players from Sabah and Labuan who are competing in this tournament,” said Mohd Supaih.
Also present at the opening ceremony were the president of the Lawas Malay Badminton Association, Mohamad Matasan and his executive council members.Scores of badminton fans from Limbang, Sipitang and Labuan also helped fill up the stands.
