Security at all entry points to be beefed up,

KUCHING: Security at all border check points throughout the state will be beefed up during the Hari Raya celebrations, Second Planning and Resource Management Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said yesterday.

“All this while our various entry points are well guarded but, as in all festive occasions, we will beef up security at all major border posts,” he told reporters after flagging off the Police Community Programme convoy here yesterday.

Awang Tengah, who is also Public Utilities Minister and Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) chairman, stressed that security is an important matter and should never be taken lightly.

He suggested that security be beefed up also in areas where crimes were known to be quite rampant.

To be more effective, Awang Tengah urged members of the public, neighbourhood watch and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to give the cops a helping hand.

As an example, he pointed out that several housing estates in Miri had taken the initiative to conduct night patrols with the police.

This effort had been effective in minimising the occurrence of crimes.

Earlier in his speech, he praised the police for introducing various programmes to get closer to the public.

He said such initiatives had resulted in the reduction of crime cases by 8.47 per cent from Jan 1 to Aug 21 this year as compared with the same period last year.

“I was made to understand that Sarawak police recorded a total of 7,860 cases in 2010 and this year it had dropped to 7,173.”

The convoy, led by Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mortadza Nazarene, among others, will be visiting the homes of police widows within and around the city.

The purpose of the visit was to cheer up the widows and their children and also to present to them some tokens in conjunction with the coming Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Also present at the flag-off ceremony were Deputy Sarawak Police Commissioner SAC Datuk Law Hong Soon, State Management Head Datuk Ahmad Sofian Md Yassin and State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief SAC Zulkipli Hassan.
