Minister: Youths have potential to go far

LAWAS: Lawas youths have what it takes to go far in and outside the district, and this has been proven by high flyers such as a local boy owning a public-listed company and operating factories in China.

Second Minister of Planning and Resource Management Datuk Amar Tengah Ali Hassan said this at Lawas Chinese youth gathering, held for the first time here for those who came from Sundar, Trusan and Lawas town.

He pointed out that the BN government is committed to bringing this far-flung district in Sarawak into the mainstream of socio-economic development, and this is reflected in the development master plans for the town, Sundar and Trusan hubs.

He was pleased with the enthusiastic interaction from the youths with BN and their interest in the development and future direction of Lawas.

“There are many plans being implemented or in the pipeline, which would create more business and job opportunities including the upcoming Medan Niaga for trading, Lawas Industrial Estate, and others that youths here can tap into,” he said.

Tengah dwelled at length on the journey of Lawas and the various plans to upgrade schools, Lawas hospital, airport and requests to the federal government to build teachers training and technical skills training institutions in Lawas in the aspiration to upgrade it into a division status.

He urged them to continue their support for BN to realise all these plans by giving him the mandate in the 10th state election in Bukit Sari seat where he is seeking his sixth term as their state assemblyman.

“In Lawas, it is team work between the Chinese, Lun Bawangs, Malays, Ibans and others to carry it forward, and my door is always open to new ideas and suggestions as we cooperate and further develop Lawas,” he said.

He acknowledged the several pertinent issues raised by the youths including lack of doctors, upgrade of SMK Lawas, high rental, lack of EPF and LHDN offices in the district.

He pointed out that SMK Lawas II would be built at the cost RM35 million following the nod by Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin during his visit here earlier this year.

The Chinese youths in Lawas gave their double thumbs up to Tengah for bringing the town and district forward with infrastructure and amenities springing up in the past two decades under his leadership.

Organising chairman Liaw Kian Meng said Lawas youths appreciated the development brought about by the leadership of Tengah as depicted in the billboard and the continuous future development plan.

He said this spoke volume of the contributions of Tengah and Lawas Member of Parliament Datuk Henry Sum Agong, and hoped the younger generation would give their full support to the BN candidate.

Also present at the function were Henry Sum, Pemanca Tan Yong H’ng and other Chinese community leaders.
