Hospital Lawas siap 2013
LAWAS: The RM121.6 million Lawas hospital project will include an eight-storey building and 76 beds and is expected to be completed within three years.
The hospital project will start with the shifting of operations to eight shoplots in the town, pending construction and renovation works which are expected to begin soon, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai yesterday.
Renovation works for the temporary premises at the shoplots are also expected to start soon without affecting the operation of the old hospital as the moving process would be done in stages. The 46-bed old hospital was built in 1969 and is in danger of collapsing.
The government approved the project in the Eight Malaysia Plan but was delayed as the Ministry of Health felt that the site offered by the state government was unsuitable, leading to public outcry.
The ministry finally decided to build the new hospital at the old site, with the area expanded to 12 acres following allocation of the land by the state government to facilitate the project implementation.
“The old site is unsuitable as it could have cost another RM20 million to fill up the swampy site,” explained Liow in an interview.
He said Lawas hospital would be classified as district hospital and those needing specialist treatments would have to seek them in Kota Kinabalu or Miri hospital.
Also present at the earth-breaking ceremony were Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Shahlin and top officials from the Ministry of Health.
