Advice On 'Prima Donna' Attitude Timely
KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 (Bernama) -- The reminder by Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to party members and leaders not to behave like 'prima donnas' has been described as most timely to ensure that the party is accepted by the people.
Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz said Umno members and leaders must discard the individualistic attitude and must cooperate and work as a team.
"We cannot allow any individual to feel that he or she is better than all the others...if we allow this to happen, then we will be destroyed. We have to do team work, a leader cannot project himself without considering the interest of the party," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby, here Monday.
He said this when asked to comment on the analogy by Najib on Sunday that in the current World Cup Football, only the team with a strong team spirit would succeed compared to the teams that had many 'prima donnas'.
When asked who was being referred to as the 'prima donna' in Umno, Mohamed Nazri, who is also a minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said: "It (the reminder) is a general statement".
Jerlun Member of Parliament (MP) Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir hoped that the prime minister's reminder would be taken in a positive manner and adopted by party members.
"The team consisting of individuals behaving like prima donnas, no matter how good they are, will eventually not get the cooperation of the others, thus will not be able to score goals in any competition.
"Similarly for us in politics, we need the cooperation of everyone to succeed in whatever we do. If we work alone, it may have an effect but eventually it will not benefit everyone," said Mukhriz, who is also the Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry.
Former Wanita Umno chief Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz said leaders who only thought of themselves and were not willing to work as a team would make it difficult for the party to be strong and have the leadership required by Umno.
"There is certainly no place for people who are individualistic, what more prima donnas, in Umno because Umno is a grassroots movement and if the leaders are up in the clouds and do not know what is actually happening at the grassroots, then the party will not be strong," she added.
