Awang Tengah: We must preserve political stability and harmony

KUCHING: Political stability and harmony must be preserved so that Sarawak can achieve social and economic progress.

Second Minister of Planning and Resource Management Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said it was important to maintain the spirit of cooperation and unity among the state’s multi-racial society.

“There is so much uncertainty in the world today, such as economic downturn in the United States and unrest in the Middle East. We must do our best to preserve political stability and harmony among our people. Unity in diversity should be our goal.

“Then we can all work together towards achieving progress, improving our living standards and providing opportunities for everyone to participate in the state’s development,” he said.

He was speaking at the presentation of donations from the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corpo-ration (STIDC) to charitable and community associations here yesterday.

Awang Tengah also said the fasting month was a time when Muslims were encouraged to carry out more charitable activities.

“This is a time for us to reach out to individuals and certain groups within our society who need assistance,” he said.

He also reminded Muslims that fasting was not an excuse to be slack in performing their duties.

“Instead we should work with integrity and commitment so that productivity is not affected,” he said.

Earlier, STIDC general manager Datuk Sarudu Hoklai said the donations were part of its corporate social responsibility to reach out to various communities.

“This has been our annual activity since 1982 to support associations in carrying out their activities and helping the less fortunate,” he said.

The total amount donated by STIDC came to RM235,000 yesterday. The recipients comprised 52 associations and welfare bodies from throughout the state.
