Uniformed bodies’ platform to train future leaders
LAWAS: Initial training in discipline and organisation in uniformed bodies in schools is a launching pad to train future leaders of the country.Second Minister of Planning and Resource Management Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan, in stating this over the weekend, said the platform inculcated leadership qualities which included integrity, discipline and good values at a young age.
“Teachers play an important role in this development and students in uniformed bodies are also immersed in the spirit of mutual respect, teamwork and harmony in a diverse background,” he said.
Awang Tengah, who is Bukit Sari assemblyman, said this when officiating at the Lawas District Students Uniformed Units Gathering held in connection with the recent Malaysia Day.
“Both teachers and parents must give their full support to the academic and character development of the students who will inherit the struggles of their forefathers to face future challenges,” he stressed.
The minister said the spirit of racial and religious harmony was the norm in Lawas district.
He added that participation in uniformed bodies also imbibed patriotism and love for stability, peace and security in the country which were fruits of conscious efforts of the government in safeguarding the peaceful environment in the country.
He also urged students to give priority to their studies as education was the key in raising the capacity to progress in the state where quality of life would be raised and poverty eradicated.
“As students, your main task is to study hard and move up to become thinkers, planners, leaders and useful citizens of the future.
“Avoid extremism, and you will become the catalyst for changing Sarawak and your environment for the better,” he added.
Earlier, he joined the uniformed bodies in a parade around the town, with a 120-metre national flag carried by students on their shoulders.
Lawas District Education Officer Matzinan Wahit said the event was the first to be held, and he thanked the minister for officiating the event despite his packed schedule in Kuching.
