KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB), the dominant party in the state BN, is abuzz with rumours of a major shake-up.

A number of senior leaders of the party are to be dropped in the coming state elections. Among them are Awang Tengah Ali Hassan state assemblyman for Bukit Sari and Asfia Awang Nasar, the state assemblyman for Semop.

Their absence at the Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud’s open house last Friday seems to lend credence to the rumours.

Awang Tengah, who is also a senior PBB vice president, is public utilities minister as well as second resource planning and management minister. At one time he was seen as a potential candidate to replace Taib. He was first elected to Dewan Undangan Negeri in 1987, representing what was then known as the Lawas constituency.

Asfia Awang Nasar is the speaker of the Dewan Undangan Negeri and was elected in the constituency of Serdeng, now known as Semop.

Others from the Bumiputera wing of PBB likely to be dropped include Naroden Majais, state assemblyman for Simunjan, Bolhassan Di (Beting Maro) Hamden Ahmad (Belawai), Dr Wahbi Junaidi (Saribas) and Simoi Peri (Lingga).

In the Pesaka wing of PBB, speculation is also rife about PBB deputy president Alfred Jabu Numpang being replaced by either his wife Empiang Jabu or one of his daughters. He has been representing Layar since 1974.

Other Pesaka wing leaders who may be dropped include Gramong Juna (Machan), Ambrose Blikau, (Katibas), and Frederick Bayoi (Kedup).

It is understood that Adenan Satem, the special adviser to the chief minister, has been named by Taib to help in selecting candidates for the state elections and his appointment has prompted many to think that he is being groomed to take over as the leader of the party.

Taib told newsmen last Friday that he had identified 70 percent of PBB candidates for the elections, and had indicated that several new faces would be selected as a way of renewing itself.

“The process of renewal in PBB is vital to ensure the party inherits high quality leadership, In PBB, we know who have volunteered to go out and who will be the new candidates and the identification is not zooming in on just one person. It will be based on two or three potential candidates in each area,” said Taib.

Meanwhile, SUPP like PBB, may bring more new faces to contest in the coming election. Last election it contested 19 constituencies and lost eight.

Parti Rakyat Sarawak may also see two new faces in the coming election especially in the constituencies of Tamin and Pelagus. It is said that PRS has groomed Edwin Banta for Tamin and Philimon Nuing for Pelagus.

As for Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party, its president William Mawan Ikom has promised that he would nominate all the eight incumbents to contest.
