PKR admits an uphill task in rural constituencies
BINTULU: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) in the state will face an uphill task to contest in rural constituencies due to logistical challenges.
PKR Bintulu branch chairman Paul Raja said the party leadership would have to work hard to overcome the shortcomings.
He disagreed with the notion that the rural constituencies were the ‘fixed deposits’ or ‘asset’ of the state Barisan Nasional.
“We are going to prove this claim wrong,” Paul told a press conference held at PKR Bintulu office here yesterday.
He pointed out that 30 percent of the candidates to be fielded by PKR in the coming state election would be women.
“It is our party’s policy to give women equal chances in politics and we will try to fulfil the 30 percent quota as endorsed by the top leadership,” he said.
Paul also affirmed that the PKR, being a component party of Pakatan Rakyat (PR) would abide by the decision made by PR on the seat allocation among PKR, DAP and PAS in the coming state election.
“We have agreed the Kidurong constituency will be defended by the incumbent Chiew Chu Sing of DAP,” he said, adding that the choice of candidate for Kakus, Jepak and Kemena constituencies had yet to be decided.
Earlier, PKR Bintulu branch issued a press release stating that the leaders and members of PKR Bintulu, Kidurong, Belaga, Jepak, Kemena and Kakus would support the present state and national lineup of leadership.
They also urged the party state and national leaders to maintain a strong party unity and work together to face common challenges Also present were PKR Kidurong branch chairman Wong Tieng Poh, Kakus branch secretary Francis Adang Jirau, Kemena branch chairman Ribi Rayang and Bintulu branch secretary Peter Jap.
