Elderly Woman Perished In Fire
LAWAS: An elderly woman, Aden Alai,70 died when her house was gutted by fire which broke out in Kampung Muncu, Ulu Merapok near here at 10.00 am last Sunday.
The fire also destroyed two other houses and a village canteen.
The deceased was staying with her elder sister, Tamu Alai, 73, and they had moved to their new house built under the ‘Program Bantuan Rakyat’ (PBR) just two months ago.
According to the Lawas Fire and Rescue Department Chief, Zaki Hussin, the cause of the fire was still under investigation. However, he did not rule out the possibility of a short circuit as the main reason.
Lawas MP Dato Henry Sum Agong who visited the scene with District Officer Haji Mohd Supaih Haji Hamdan provided some personal aid to the victims while waiting for assistance from the relevant agencies.
He also advised the people not to build their houses too close to one another to prevent fire from spreading and to use electrical utensils according to their manual instructions.
Sum was also quick to praise the Fire and Rescue Services Department from Sipitang, Sabah which also rushed to the scene to provide assistance.
He also suggested to Mohd Supaih to form a voluntary fire prevention corps in several areas such as Awat-Awat, Punang, Kuala Lawas and the town area.
Meanwhile, the victim was sent to the district hospital here for a post mortem before a burial service was held the next day. She was buried at Tagal Cemetary in Merapok.
Kampung Muncu is located at Ulu Merapok which is a 45-minute drive from Lawas. Most of the people here are from the Tagal community.
