Flawless Civil Service
KUCHING: Civil servants must discharge their duties with full commitment because any flaw in the delivery system will become a breeding ground for corruption.
Chief Minister, Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, said if the civil service was riddled with half heartedness, idling attitude and unduly postponement, it would provide room for dishonest officers to turn to corruption, graft and power abuse.
Because the accumulative effect of corruption is dire for the whole nation, Taib wanted all heads of departments and agencies to ensure that no such ills existed in their respective departments.
"Favourable factors in the work place must be perpetuated and be made a stronghold in carrying out the responsibilities assigned to us," said Taib at the closing of Sarawak Anti-Corruption Carnival 2009 at Padang Merdeka here yesterday. His text of speech was read by Housing Minister, Datuk Amar Abang Haji Johari Tun Openg.
The event was organised by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sarawak, with the support of State Federal Secretary Office, the State government and the Celebrity Recreation Club.
Taib said an event such as the carnival should be held regularly to raise public awareness of the need to eradicate corruption.
"I want it to be an annual programme to raise the integrity of the people of Sarawak and the awareness pertaining to corruption and abuse of power as these bad habits not only endanger ourselves but also our families, society and the country as a whole.
He said full commitment from every strata of society on this matter would be in line with Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's, vision to make Malaysia an advanced nation.
Meanwhile, Johari said Sarawak definitely welcomed the 11 measures announced by Najib last Saturday and thanked him for the priority he placed on the people of Sarawak.
"He (Najib) also asserted on the needs of social and housing aspects. All in all, he has responded to the basic needs and improvement of the infrastructure. Compare to Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak has such a big area and of course, we need a lot of capital to improve our infrastructure.
"Actually, we need financial assistance for the development of different areas. Even city area has a poverty segment. I have also requested the Prime Minister to improve urban drainage and streets besides rural roads," said Johari.
He also hoped the public transport in Sarawak would also be improved as Najib had stressed much on the importance of public transport.
State Secretary, Datuk Amar Wilson Baya Dandot, former State Secretary, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Hamid Bugo, State Federal Secretary, Tun Mohd Yahaya Basmin, Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Deputy State Secretary Datuk Mohd Morshidi Abdul Ghani, MACC Commissioner, Dato' Seri Haji Ahmad Said Hamdan and State MACC Director, Samsiah Abu Bakar were also present at the ceremony.
